How to care for your BarbourĀ® jacket

  • How to care for your Barbour jacket
We field hundreds of emails and calls every year from customers that are wondering how to take care of their Barbour Wax Cotton Jacket. This includes jackets like the Beaufort, Bedale, Border, and many more.

First and foremost, the wax jackets cannot be taken to a traditional cleaners. You can not dry-clean or launder (machine wash) the coats as that would ruin the finish of the jacket to the point where reapplying wax would no longer be effective. So, with that said, how do you clean or take care of a jacket?

To clean the jacket, you should only use ice cold water and a sponge. Absolutely no detergents, of any kind, should be used. Once you remove all the dirt that you can, evaluate the jacket to see if it needs to be rewaxed. If you wear your jacket on a daily basis, you may need to rewax every year to keep the fabric from tearing in stress spots.

The need to rewax can be determined by looking at the jacket to locate any worn looking areas. This is usually first spotted in the elbows and shoulders. Look for lighter color areas or lines that look like stress areas. If you spot these wear spots, and usually this occurs with regular use after a couple of years, you can send the coat to us for reproofing or you can buy a tin of wax and do it yourself. The wax is called Barbour Thornproof Dressing. Taking care of your jacket will extend its life as well as keeping it waterproof.

Rewaxing a jacket is really quite easy to do. It takes about an hour per jacket and involves heating the wax container in a pot of hot water and rubbing the wax in a circular pattern into the coat using a soft cloth (old t shirt works well). Wearing rubber gloves is a good idea too. You will want to heat the wax until it turns to a clear liquid, making it very easy to apply to the jacket.  There is a full set of directions on the page Thornproof Wax on our website.

If you don't want to try this yourself, you can send the jacket to BestGear for reproofing and repair if needed. Expect to be without your jacket for 6-8 weeks and pay $50 for reproofing and return shipping. We can also give you a quote for any repairs that may be needed. This can be for fixing tears, zippers, ect. You can choose the repairs you would like to have done once you see the quote. The jacket must come into us after it has been thoroughly cleaned with the water and the sponge.

If you want to try it yourself, you can purchase a tin of wax and have it delivered within a matter of days! You can always call us if you have questions. We would be happy to help you. 1-800-BARBOUR
